DONATEDr. Angele Ibanda Pembele holds a Ph.D in Plant Breeding and Biotechnology from Makerere University; Her Ph.D. studies were sponsored by the Inter-University Cooperation to Train Scientists for African Agriculture (CSAA), an Intra–ACP mobility project, and the next generation of scientists" of Carnegie Cooperation of New York through the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM). She holds a MSc. in Environmental sciences management in Developing Countries from the University of Liege in Belgium. Her master’s programme was sponsored by the Belgian Agency for International Cooperation named Belgium Technical Cooperation (BTC/Belgium). ). Dr. Angele is a lecturer at the Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources Management (Faculté de gestion des ressources naturelles et renouvelable), University of Kisangani, P. O. 2012 Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo. She has also been working with the University of Kisangani at the Faculty of Sciences as the coordinator of the sector of Masako in the project called “Service Laïque des coopérations au Développent (SLCD /ADIKIS)”, in DR Congo for the past ten years. This position predisposed her to intense extension activities to train farmers in adopting appropriate practices for forest conservation and agricultural activities to improve household-level production for food security and environmental protection.
Dr. Angele underwent postdoctoral training at Uganda's National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI) under the supervision of Dr. Kawuki. Her postdoctoral program was sponsored by the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) from August 2020 to August 2022.
During her postdoctoral training, she led a multidisciplinary team to enhance her skills as a postdoctoral scientist. The team consisted of three Ph.D and two master candidates. Some of them were working on their thesis research related to cassava's resilient traits such as cassava brown streak disease and cassava mosaic disease resistance, while others were investigating end-user quality traits like the texture of boiled roots, starch content and hydrogen cyanide content. One PhD candidate is still conducting research in the department of Agricultural extension and innovation studies.
In these undertakings, focus was on developing and/or optimizing tools that enhance cassava breeding (e.g. genomic selection, Near-infrared spectroscopy). Accordingly, this experiential learning has equipped her with skills on: a) equipment prioritization, use and maintenance, and b) research process cross-functionality.
From 2022 to 2023, she worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Makerere University Research Centre for Crop Improvement in Uganda. Through the doctoral and post-doc attachments, she has also been able to publish and co-author many papers
